Birkenwiese Cycle Path Bridge, Dornbirn

Structural Verification

The Dornbirner Ache winds its way through the city in a tangential course, connecting the downtown area with the surrounding neighborhoods. Residents and visitors alike find relaxation along the riverbed and the riverside paths.

A narrow steel-truss bridge with a span of 44.5 meters and a total length of 60 meters allows pedestrians and cyclists to cross the waterway. The bridge’s width varies between 4.3 and 6.8 meters.

The footbridge’s design was carefully planned with structural considerations in mind: a slender steel box girder made of weather-resistant steel, elegantly tapering toward the center, spans the shallow riverbed and is firmly anchored in reinforced concrete abutments. The narrow banks of the Ache required a particularly slender design for the footbridge, which emphasizes its elegance and lightness.
