Membrane Facade Jena Stadium

Structural Engineering
Steel construction
Glass and facade construction

Since the original steel structure was not designed to support a vertically tensioned membrane, we opted for a frame construction. Steel frames measuring approximately 4.25 x 13.5 m were fabricated for this purpose. The membrane was tensioned horizontally and braced to the frame’s edge beams, which ran from bottom to top. The steel frames were connected to the on-site steel structure at five points along their height. The frame construction allowed the membrane tensile forces—which should not be underestimated—to be braced within the frame elements.

The “ad hoc Arena” in Jena has been named “Stadium of the Year” for 2024 (The poll was organized by the online portal StadiumDB.com. All stadiums opened or renovated in 2024 with a capacity of at least 15,000 seats were considered.)
